Gorilla Glass

If I didn’t know any better, I’d say gorillas are taking over.  There’s Gorilla Glue, Gorilla Tape, and even Gorilla Glass!  I guess those Samsung Galaxy Tab commercials showing the tablet wedged into the back pocket of your jeans don’t look as foolish as we thought.  Gorilla Glass uses a unique chemical strengthening to make one of the most scratch and shatter resistant glass surfaces available.  Check out a durability demonstration of the same glass used in Samsung Galaxy S phones and Gorilla Glass’ own glass flaw comparison chart after the jump.

Corning Gorilla® Glass Timeline

1961
Project Muscle Experiments lead to an ultra strong glass named ‘Chemcor.’
1962
The company sent a film clip of scientists banging and bending Chemcor™ glass to 200 television stations.
1963
The company received nearly 2,000 inquiries on Chemcor glass including use for telephone booths. However, only a few of those ideas made it into production and none of them became a major product line.
1964
Once the Chemcor process was patented by Corning, automotive, aviation and pharmaceutical industries began to implement the process.
1965
Chemcor glass was used in many commercial and industrial products until the 1990’s. Variants of Chemcor continue to be used in ophthalmic and pharmaceutical products.
2005
The first mobile device to incorporate cover glass appeared in the market. Corning’s New Business Development team started looking for opportunities in display covers.
2006
The New Business Development team identified an opportunity for glass in cell phones and other display covers. They selected Chemcor glass and initiated a formal project.
2007
From February to May, the Gorilla team sprinted through trials and research to develop the new glass composition, which was successful in its initial run.
2008
After two innovative composition developments in less than 18 months, the glass could be produced in uniform, thin sheets with a pristine surface.
2009
Gorilla glass collaborations were announced with several key brands including: LG, Samsung, Motion Computing and Dell.
